Problems Faced by UNICEF Bangladesh

UNICEF developed many more games before and after developing the Meena Game. The plot and the context of this game were South Asian context. But they had some special requirements regarding the Meena video game. So that the target audience could play the game easily. However, it was very hard to fulfill those special requirements. UNICEF Bangladesh faced some problems before developing the game. The problems behind the Meena Game were:

  • Meena Game has to be Within 50 MegaByte (MB)
  • Making Animated Meena Game within the Size
  • It should be Playable on Any Low-configuration Device
  • Have to be an Offline Featured So that the Village or Suburb Children also Can Play

Challenges Faced by Riseup Labs' Developers

When UNICEF Bangladesh gave the task to Riseup Labs to develop, there were several issues. Even the developer team also was in trouble finding the way out. Because making a game in 50 MB, including offline features, animation, low configuration, and other special features, is not an easy task to do.
So the Meena game developer team faced some major challenges during the development of the game. The major challenges that they faced during the development were:

  • 50MB Sized Meena Game
  • 3 Types of Environments
  • 50+ Unique Mini-games
  • 500+ Animations
  • 35+ Characters
  • 14 Levels

50MB Sized Meena Game

According to the requirements of UNICEF Bangladesh, the size of the Meena Game should have been more than 300MB. But they wanted it within 50MB. So, generally, it became a challenge for the developers to maintain the game size.

Image of different environments of Meena Game

3 Different Environments

Meena Game has three different environments - City, Village, and Fantasy. The environment has a great effect on a game. Players love to play in dynamic environments. But the expected game size has an effect on the environment design also. Developers of the Meena game had to develop a dynamic and reusable environment. So, the environment design of this game was challenging for them.

50+ Unique Mini-games

Not only 2 or 3 games, but this game also had to have more than 50 unique mini-games. But every game has a minimal size, which was not possible to compress into 50 MB. It was a big challenge for the developers to build the Meena Game.

Image of Meena mini games

Image of more than 500 animations in Meena Game

500+ Animations

A developer team needs to make many animations to develop a video game. But it’s a tough case for a 2D and minimized game. If you are going to add more animation, the size of the game will be increased automatically. But for the Meena Game, it was a different case. So, the developers of Meena Game felt it challenging.

35+ Characters

UNICEF Bangladesh wanted the game to resemble the Meena cartoon. There were multiple characters in the cartoon. The Meena Game developer team had to build more than 35 Characters in this game. According to the requirements of UNICEF Bangladesh, this has to be included in the limited size.

14 Levels

The Developer Team of Meena Game had a task to develop 14 Levels within 50 MegaBytes. It was very challenging to make these many levels when the limitation of game size was only 50 MB.

Solutions Provided by Riseup Labs

To solve the problems and challenges, the whole developer team of the Meena video game had a problem-solving discussion to solve the problems. This process involves sharing ideas, perspectives, and information to pinpoint the underlying reason behind the issue. Then generate potential solutions, evaluate their feasibility, and ultimately reach a consensus on the best course of action. Because it can solve the main challenge of minimizing the game to 50 MB.

Finally, the designers, developers, sound engineers, artists, and animators found the solution. They all made changes according to their solutions. They filled up the requirements of UNICEF Bangladesh by making the game in only 28 MB.

Riseup Labs became the topic of discussion in the IT companies in Bangladesh for this solution. Even many game developer companies also asked team Riseup Labs how they did do it! Let's see what kind of solutions Riseup Labs made for the Meena Game:

  • Meena Game in 28MB
  • Low-configuration
  • Offline Feature
